About RPPN Fazenda Rio Vermelho

RPPN Fazenda Rio Vermelho is a private natural heritage reserve located in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This reserve aims to conserve the biodiverse ecosystems of the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the most threatened and richest tropical forests in the world. The geography of the reserve features undulating hills, streams, and patches of native forest that host a variety of flora and fauna endemic to the region. The Atlantic Forest here is characterized by dense vegetation, high humidity, and a rich canopy layer that provides habitat to many species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects.

Established to promote conservation on private land, Fazenda Rio Vermelho protects important fragments of forest that support endangered species and help maintain ecological corridors linking larger conservation units. It also acts as a site for environmental education and scientific research, encouraging sustainable practices and awareness about the importance of forest preservation.

Visitors to the reserve primarily experience it through guided hikes and wildlife observation, especially birdwatching, as the area is home to several rare and endemic bird species. The reserve's trails wind through pristine forest areas and along water bodies, offering peaceful immersion into the Brazilian Atlantic Forest’s natural beauty. Though publicly accessible visitation is limited to ensure protection, the reserve works with schools, researchers, and ecotourism groups to foster a strong connection between humans and nature.
